HOW TO USE HAWAIIAN FRUIT

Description: How to Use Hawaiian Fruit was originally published in 1912 in Honolulu, where the author once owned a popular restaurant. Petroglyph Press added illustrations by William D. Brooks in 1974 and in 1999 reset the type and added a new cover design by Jan Moon, but kept the flavor of the original cookbook. Almost all of the recipes are very simple and call for basic ingredients. Note, with amusement, the recipe for Lomilomi Salmon on page 73 which calls for “5 cents onions and 5 cents tomatoes”. How times have changed!

LEAVES FROM A GRASS HOUSE

Desciption: When Don Blanding discovered Hawai'i back in the 1920's Hawai'i discovered its poet laureate. For many people his poems about Hawaiçi keep alive their romantic dreams of a paradise in the Pacific. Born in Oklahoma, Blanding lived from 1894 to 1957. His great love for Hawaiçi and its people is reflected in his poetry. This was his first book, originally self-published in 1923. He went on to author numerous books and later toured the country reading his poetry and sharing his experiences in Hawai'i.

Descrption: The first pictures seen by Europeans of the newly-discovered "Sandwich Islands" were those of John Webber. They are still among the most compelling images of Hawai'i ever produced, transporting one back to that time and place. Much of what we know about Hawaiian culture at the time of first contact with the West was conveyed through Webber's drawings. A keen observer, he integrated many small details into his works, producing studies of weapons and artifacts, people and places. Upon his return to London from the Pacific in 1780 Webber's work was greeted with enthusiasm. Webber produced many engravings to accompany the official narrative of the voyage, including twelve plates of Hawai'i. Petroglyph Press, Ltd. takes pride in reproducing eight selected John Webber Hawai'i engravings, once again making these historic and timeless images available.

A brief history of the Petroglyph Press Since opening its doors in 1962, Petroglyph Press has been a family owned and operated business. The Reed family arrived in Hilo in 1958, when Stephen Reed accepted a position with Hilo Sugar Company. Frances Reed became children's librarian at the Hawaii County Library, shortly thereafter. In early 1962, Steve opened a printing company, Petroglyph Press, on the corner of Haili and Kinoole Streets in downtown Hilo. It seemed natural to name the new business after the ancient Hawaiian form of graphic communication. In addition to business and personal printing, it was decided to reprint books about Hawaii which had gone out of print, but contained information still of great interest to the public. Original works by local authors were also published, in response to the ever-increasing demand for Hawaiiana. As he was growing up David Reed assisted his parents in the business. When the Reeds retired in 1974, David assumed ownership of Petroglyph Press. Upon their marriage in 1976, David and his wife, Christine, became partners in the enterprise. Over the years the company has grown to encompass three businesses. The name Petroglyph Press is used exclusively for book publishing. The name Old Town Printers & Stationers was chosen for the retail printing operation. Basically Books, also known as "The Map Shop," was opened in 1985. The bookstore specializes in Hawaiiana, and has a unique selection of gift merchandise. One of the state's largest selections of maps and an ever changing collection of out-of-print Hawaiiana makes visiting Basically Books an experience not to be missed.
